Biographie / biography

American tenor, Timothy Oliver, was most recently recognized this past February 2017 by Das Opernglas for his portrayal of Loge in the new RHEINGOLD Production at the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater as “vocally brilliant” and “intelligently sly.” Incidentally, Opernwelt agreed writing “Timothy Oliver distinguishes himself as a clever countryman Loge with intelligent elocution.”

Mr. Oliver began his career by earning a "fest contract" with the world famous Semperoper in Dresden, Germany. In his time there, Mr. Oliver has performed in over 50 operas with over 60 roles in his repertoire. Such roles include the Steuermann in Wagner's DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER, Brighella and the Tanzmeister from Strauss' ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, Arbace from Mozart's IDOMENEO, Pedrillo from Mozart’s DIE ENTFÜHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL, The Fool in Christ from Mussorsgy’s BORIS GODUNOV, and Camille de Rosillon from Léhar's DIE LUSTIGE WITWE. Mr. Oliver’s work in modern music at the Semperoper earned him praise from Die Welt which wrote of his portrayal as the 2nd Soldier in Hans Werner Henze’s, WE COME TO THE RIVER, as "the strongest vocal performance of the evening.”

Furthermore, Mr. Oliver was extremely excited for his debut with the Salzburg Osternfestspiele at the end of March 2018 as the role of Habinnas in Bruno Maderna’s chamber opera SATYRICON.

In addition to his numerous performances at the Semperoper and concert appearances, Mr. Oliver maintains a close relationship with the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater. After his first appearance in Oldenburg in 2016 in the role of Gandhi in Philip Glass’ SATYAGRAHA, Mr. Oliver was invited to return for his debut in February of 2017 as Loge in RHEINGOLD and 2018 as Mime in SIEGFRIED. Mr. Oliver’s debut at the Komische Oper in Berlin last season was the result of jumping in at the last minute for a new production of the modern opera from HK Gruber DIE GESCHICHTEN AUS DEM WIENERWALD. This was followed by two further invitations from the Komische Oper for the role of Ulrich Eißlinger in DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG and the role of John Darling in the new production of Richard Ayer’s opera PETER PAN. Mr. Oliver returns to the Komische Oper for the season 2017/18 as Prince Arjuna in Philip Glass’ SATYAGRAHA and will travel in April 2018 to Japan with the Komische Oper’s world famous DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE production in the role of Monostatos.

Mr. Oliver is equally at home on the concert and recital stage. He made his debut in 2008 at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, under the baton of Maestro Sebastian Weigle singing the famous Dying Swan in Carl Orff’s CARMINA BURANA. Mr. Oliver maintains a very close relationship with Maestro Fabio Luisi who first brought him to Vienna in 2010 to the Musikverein where he sang the title role in Berlioz’s DAMNATION DE FAUST. Thereafter, Maestro Luisi has engaged him to sing with orchestras all over the world including the London Symphony, Vienna Philharmonic, NHK Symphony, and L’Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. In addition, Mr. Oliver is a sought after interpreter of numerous Bach works, in particular the WEIHNACHTSORATORIUM, JOHANNES PASSION and MATTHÄUS PASSION in both the roles of the Evangelist and Tenor Soloist.
