Biographie / biography

Welsh tenor Timothy Richards studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music and was later awarded an entrance scholarship to the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester.

In 1996 he won the Towyn Roberts Scholarship at the Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales one of the most prestigious singing competitions in Wales.
Within a couple of years the tenor was singing the leading roles on some of the best stages in Europe. He made his professional operatic debut in 1998 as Alfredo in La Traviata for Welsh National Opera. This was directly followed by invitations to perform in Basel, Innsbruck and Oslo.

In the upcoming season of 2017/18 Mr Richards will sing Don José from Carmen at Komische Oper Berlin and the 1. Geharnischter at the Opéra-Comique.

This season Mr Richards sang Don Josè in Carmen (Komische Oper Berlin), Werther in Werther (Chemnitz), Prinz in Rusalka (Komische Oper Berlin), Erik in Der Fliegende Holländer in his debut and première at the Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona and the debut role of Walter in Loreley by Alfredo Catalani at the St Gallen Summer Festival 2017.

His engagement to sing the Italian Tenor in Der Rosenkavalier at the Semperoper Dresden was the beginning of his career in Germany. In the year 2000 he also made his role debut as Rodolfo in La Bohème at the Semperoper Dresden. Since then Timothy Richards appears in the leading tenor roles at Semperoper Dresden, Staatsoper Berlin, Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, National Opera Oslo, Royal Danish Opera Copenhagen, Grand Opera Poznan, Glyndebourne Oper, ENO London Colliseum, Staatsoper Leipzig, Staatsoper Stuttgart, the Spoleto Festival in Italy and at many other opera houses and festivals in Europe.

The centre of his repertoire is the famous Italian and French Opera including Rodolfo/La Boheme, Duke/Rigoletto , Riccardo/Un Ballo in Maschera, Pinkerton/Madama Butterfly, Cavaradossi/Tosca, Luigi/ Il Tabarro, Don José/Carmen, Hoffmann/Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Werther/Werther, Italian singer/ Der Rosenkavalier.
He also sings the roles of Hans in Die verkaufte Braut and The Prince in Rusalka.

Timothy Richards is recognized as one of the leading tenors in Europe. He is critically acclaimed for his smooth tenor sound crowned with brilliance on the high notes.
Timothy Richards studied privately with the Welsh Baritone Gwyn Griffiths the traditional Italian school of singing. Griffiths was trained by the same teacher who taught the world famous soprano Dame Joan Sutherland. Sutherland was known also as the mentor of Luciano Pavarotti.
