Tenor Luis Chapa has been praised for his “mellifluous, stupendously-powerful”voice. A native of Mexico, now British Citizen, he studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England.

Performances in 2014-15 include Samson in Darmstadt directed by Inga Levant and conducted by Elias Grandy, Otello in Basel Directed by Calixto Bieto, Trovatore in Rovigo, Foresto in the Opera Attila at the Teatro Verdi Trieste conducted by Donato Renzetti, Turandot in Mexico City and the cover of Don Jose In Carmen at the Metropolitan Opera House.Early that year he sang; Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly with Teatro Verdi Trieste conducted by Donato Renzetti and directed by Giulio Ciabatti and Otello with the Staatstheater Oldenburg. With the Metropolitan Opera he covered the role of Pollione in Norma. Also gave a Puccini Gala Concert at Teatro Comunale di Ferrara and a Verdi Gala Concert in Busseto. Luis Chapa has worked with conductors such as Donato Renzetti, Pier Giorgio Morandi, A. Allemandi, M. Bosch, D. Callegari, S. Dinic, A. Fisch, R. Frizza, A. Joel, G. Kuhn, C. Montanaro, S. Soltesz, O. von Dohnányi, and stage directors such as J. Copley, C. Alden, G. Ciabatti, R.Doucet, D. Hilsdorf, P. Himmelmann, C. Lievi, D. McVicar, C. Mielitz, G. Montafon, M. Trelinski, B. Uzan. Mr. Chapa's highlights of recent seasons were his USA debut as Don José in Carmen with Anita Rechelishvili in the title role at the Seattle Opera, where he returned to perform as Calaf in Turandot; his debut as Pollione in Norma in Christopher Alden’s new production at Opera North in Leeds; his role debut as Tannhäuser for the Tiroler Festspiele Erl in Austria, directed and conducted by Gustav Kuhn, where he also performed as Erik in Der fliegende Holländer. Mr. Chapa also performed Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly with Aalto Theater Essen, Manrico in Il Trovatore (cover) with the Metropolitan Opera New York, Calaf in Turandot with the Polish National Opera in Warsaw and with the Heidenheim Festival in Germany, and the title role of Verdi’s Otello at Theater Freiburg, in which he was lauded as “a heroic tenor of the first-rate” (Badische Zeitung). In Freiburg he also made his debut as Hermann in Pique Dame.

In Karlsruhe he sang again as Tannhäuser. Other engagements included: Cavaradossi in Tosca at Stadttheater Bern in Switzerland; Luigi in Il tabarro, Alvaro in La forza del destino, Don José in Carmen in a new production by Philipp Himmelman, Maurizio in Adriana Lecouvreur and Andrey in Mazeppa, all for the Croatian National Opera; Manrico in a new production of Il trovatore in Wiesbaden; Radames in Aida, Laca in Jenufa, Canio in Pagliacci, and Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana in the Dom Stufen Festival in Erfurt, Turiddu in Cavalleria rusticana in Mannheim; Radames in Aida in Freiburg; Viscardo in Mercadantes Il Giuramento in Giessen; Otello directed by Dietrich Hilsdorf in Bonn; Cavaradossi in Tosca, Turiddu/Canio in Cavalleria/Pagliacci, and Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, all directed by Christina Mielitz in Dortmund; Turiddu/ Canio in a new production of Cavalleria rusticana/ Pagliacci in Saarbrucken, as well as Otello and Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly in Braunschweig.

Luis Chapa has also appeared in the United Kingdom with Welsh National Opera performing the role of Turiddu in Cavalleria rusticana and was subsequently invited to sing both Turiddu and Canio in a double bill, the title role in Don Carlos, Manrico in Il trovatore, and Radames in Aida. For Dorset Opera, he performed Calaf in Turandot and Canio in Pagliacci. Luis Chapa's recent concert engagements have included Turiddu in Cavalleria rusticana at the Queen Elizabeth Hall; Verdi Gala with the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra; a Concert of Puccini with the BBC Concert Orchestra and a Verdi Gala with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Pamplona, both conducted by Carl Davis, and Mahler's Symphony Number 8 with the Orquesta Sinfonica of Nuevo Leon.
