Biographie / biography
Gan-ya Ben-gur Akselrod began her musical education playing cello, piano and clarinet.
In 2022 she will sing Olympia in Hoffmann’s ERzählungen at Deutsche Oper Berlin amongst other engagements.
In 2020/21 she reprised the role Nurit in Les Mille Endormis at Theatres de la Ville de Luxembourg and The Calouste Gubelikan Foundation Lissabon. She also sang concerts amongst others Once upon a Time at Grafenegg and Jukebox at Thetaer Freiburg.
In the season of 2018/19 she sang Clorinda in La Cenerentola at Oldenburgisches Staatstheater, Chiang Ch’ing in Nixon in China at Staatsoper Stuttgart and Nurit in Les Mille Endormis at Festival d’Aix en Provence.
In 2017 she sang the role of Marie in “Le Malentendu” by Fabian Panisello at the Neue Oper Wien and Teatros de Canal in Madrid.
In 2016 she made her debut at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse as Elvira in Rossini's L'italiana in Algeri as well as at the Israeli Opera as Konstanze in The abduction from the Serail. In fall 2016 she returned to Israel to sing the soprano part in Haydn’s “Die Schöpfung” with the Jerusalem Camerata.
In the 2015/16 season she sang Blondchen with Glyndebourne Opera on tour and returned as a guest to sing the role of Lucy in the Brecht Die Dreigroschenoper at Theater an der Wien in a production directed by Keith Warner (cond. J. Kalitzke).
In 2014/45 Gan-ya completed her second season as part of the Young Ensemble of Theater an der Wien, where she was heard as Almirena in Händel's Rinaldo and as Thérèse in a new production of Poulenc's Les Mamelles de Tiresias at Theater an der Wien’s Kammeroper Wien. In October she appeared with the Israeli Chamber Orchestra as Amor in Gluck's Orfeo. That spring she debuted the role of Barbarina at Theater an der Wien in a new production
of Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro conducted by M. Minkowski and in June she debuted at the Händel Festspiele Halle in the Vinci/Händel revival of Semiramide (Tamiri).
Gan-ya is the recent 2nd Prize Winner of the the 3rd International Voice Competition of the Güzin Gürel Arts & Science Foundation Istanbul. After winning the 1st prize at the Hilde Zadek Competition in Vienna in 2013, the American-Israeli soprano was invited to join the Young Ensemble of Theater an der Wien for the 2013/14 season where she sang Tamiri (Semiramide/ L.Vinci- G.F.Händel), Clorinda (La Cenerentola/ G.Rossini) and Servilia (La Clemenza di Tito/ W.A.Mozart) and gave a solo recital. In 2013 she appeared in the role of Bubikopf in Viktor Ullmann's Der Kaiser von Atlantis with the Klangforum Wien conducted by Rossen Gergov in a production of Markus Kupferblum in Vienna.
Gan-ya has sung the roles of Bauernjunge (Die Dorfschule / F. V. Weingartner) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Thaïs (Thaïs / J. Massenet), Marfa (The Tsar’s Bride / N.R. Korsakov)
and Michaela (Carmen / G. Bizet) all with the Brooklyn Orchestra in New York, Bubikopf (Der Kaiser von Atlantis / V. Ullman) with the Opera Moderne in New York, as well as La
Princesse and La Chauve Souris (L'enfant et les sortilèges / M. Ravel) with the Buchman-Mehta Orchestra in Israel, Despina (Cosi fan Tutte / W. A. Mozart ), Belinda and Second Woman (Dido and Aeneas / H. Purcell), Erste Knabe (Die Zauberflöte / W. A. Mozart) and Barbarina (Le Nozze di Figaro / W.A. Mozart) with the Tel Aviv Music Academy and the Abu-Gosh Festival in Israel.
Ms. Ben-gur Akselrod made her European debut in 2011 at Aix-en-Provence and a year earlier had debuted with an opera gala at the Carnegie Hall in New York. She is also recipient of prizes and awards from Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, the Paul Ben-Haim Competition , the America-Israel Cultural Foundation, the Ronen Foundation, the IVAI and the Tel Aviv Music Academy, and has extensive concert performance experience. She has a postgraduate degree in opera from the Conservatory of Music of the City University of New York.
