Biographie / biography

Gan-ya Ben-gur Akselrod began her musical education playing cello, piano and clarinet. She is a recent winner of the Lys Simonette award for her performance of Lied der Lulu at the Lotte Lenya Competition in NYC. Future engagements include a debut with Staatsoper Stuttgart as Chiang Ch’ing in a new production of Nixon in China, a concert tour with Hans Zimmer, a solo recital at the Wiener Lieder Herbst Festival and Clorinda in Cenerentola with Oldenburgisches Staatstheater.

After winning the 1st prize at the Hilde Zadek Competition in Vienna she was invited to join the Young Ensemble of Theater an der Wien, where she was heard as Almirena (Rinaldo), Clorinda (La Cenerentola), Servillia (La clemenza di Tito), Lucy (Die Dreigroschenoper), Thérèse (Les Mamelles de Tiresias), Barbarina (Le Nozze di Figaro) and Tamiri (Semiramide / Vinci & Händel).

2018-19 season highlights include Madam Mao Tse Tung in Nixon in China at Staatsoper Stuttgart, the role of Nurit in a newly commissioned opera, a co-production of the Aix-en-Provence Festival and Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg, Clorinda in Cenerentola with Staastoper Oldenburg, a tour with Hanz Zimmer's symphonic music and concerts with the Israeli Opera, Belfast and Duisburger Philharmoniker.

Other engagements include Blondchen (The abduction from the Serail) with Glyndebourne Opera on tour, Elvira (L'italiana in Algeri) with Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, Bauernjunge (Die Dorfschule) with the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Konstanze (The abduction from the Serail) with the Israeli Opera, Bubikopf (Der Kaiser von Atlantis) with the Klangforum Wien in Vienna and Opera Moderne in New York, Marie in Le Malentendu with the Neue Oper Wien and Teatros del Canal in Madrid, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi with the iSing Festival in China, Contessa in Le Nozze di Figaro with the Jerusalem Camerata and the Be’er-Sheva Symphony and concerts with the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, the Aix-en-Provence Festival’s residency in France and Carnegie Hall in NY.

Gan-ya is also a 2nd Prize Winner of the International Voice Competition of the Güzin Gürel Arts & Science Foundation in Istanbul and a recipient of numerous awards from Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, the Paul Ben-Haim Competition, the America-Israel Cultural Foundation and the Ronen Foundation. She holds a Master’s degree in opera from the Conservatory of Music of the City University of New York and a Bachelor’s degree in music performance from Tel-Aviv University.
