Biographie / biography

Modestas Pitrėnas is one of the most accomplished and well-known young Lithuanian conductors.

Since the 2018/2019 season, Modestas Pitrenas is principal conductor of the Symphony Orchestra and the Theater St.Gallen.

Former Chief Conductor of the Kaunas Symphony Orchestra in Lithuania and former National Music Director of the Latvian National Opera in Riga, is currently Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra in Vilnius.

In 1995 he studied at the Mozarteum (Universität Mozarteum Salzburg) and he graduated from the Lithuanian Academy of Music twice: in choir conducting and in symphony and opera conducting.

In 2003 Modestas Pitrėnas won First Prize, Gold medal and received Special Prize of Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra in 7th International Grzegorz Fitelberg Competition for symphony conducting in Katowice, Poland, which provided him with the possibility to appear as a guest conductor with the leading Polish orchestras.
Since 2003 he has been teaching at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre at the Conducting Department.

In the recent years Modestas Pitrėnas has also conducted many programs and symphonic performances.

During the past years Modestas Pitrėnas has actively worked in the operatic arts field. He conducts G. Bizet’s „Carmen”, G. Donizetti’s „L’Elisir d’Amore”, R. Portman’s „The Little Prince”, P. Eötvös’„Love and other demons”, G. Verdi’s „Requiem”, R. Strauss’„Salome”, R. Wagner’s „Die Walküre”, „Der fliegende Holländer”, J. Massenet’s „Werther”, P.I.Tchaikovsky’s “The Queen of Spades”, G. Verdi’s „Aida” and a.o.

Modestas Pitrėnas is collaborating with many famous soloists: vocalists Matti Salminen, Jaakko Ryhänen, Aleksandrs Antonenko, Egils Silins, Ain Anger, Inga Kalna, Kristine Opolais, Pretty Yende and others.

In May of 2009 Modestas Pitrėnas was invited to conduct the solo concert of the world famous soprano Violeta Urmana at the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Hall.

Modestas Pitrėnas was the musical director of the new production of G. Puccini’s „Il Trittico” at the Latvian National Opera (Riga) and „Let’s dance Bach” at the Polish National Opera (Teatr Wielki, Warsaw).
He made his debute as the musical director of Mozart’s „Zauberflöte” at Oper Köln, G. Puccini’s „Il Trittico” at Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Düsseldorf), the new production of G. Rossini’s „Il Barbiere di Siviglia” at the Latvian National Opera (Riga) and in St. Gallen.
In St. Gallen he conducted also Salome and La Wally.

Maestro Pitrenas has recorded over 10 CDs with choral and orchestral music.
