Biographie / biography

The Swedish baritone Karl-Magnus Fredriksson was appointed Royal Court Singer in 2004 and in 2013 he received The Litteris et Artibus medal from His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. He is a member of The Royal Swedish Academy of Music. In June 2018 he was awarded with the prestigious Jussi Björling Award.

He has worked with the Royal Opera in Stockholm since 1999 where his roles include Figaro (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Count Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro), Marcello (La Bohème), Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), The Unknown (Hans Gefors’ Christina), Fritz/Pierrot (Die tote Stadt), the title role in Eugene Onegin, Count Luna (Il Trovatore), Germont (La Traviata), Absalom (Sven-David Sandstrom´s Bathsheba), Sharpless (Madama Butterfly), Jason (Daniel Börtz’ Medea), Renato (Un ballo in maschera) and the title role in Rigoletto (2018). His guest appearances include Marcello (La Bohème) in the New National Theatre in Tokyo.

Karl-Magnus Fredriksson has performed with many of the foremost conductors in the world such as Sir Colin Davies, Andrew Davies, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Frans Brüggen, Alan Gilbert, Jesús López-Cobos, Sakari Oramo, Herbert Blomstedt, Leif Segerstam, Pier Giorgio Morandi, Andrew Manze, Lawrence Renes and with several of the big orchestras. He is a frequent guest in many European countries singing opera and Lieder concerts, orchestral songs and sacred works. His long lasting collaboration with the famous Swedish conductors Eric Ericson and Gustaf Sjökvist resulted in recordings and concerts of contemporary music and a long tradition of concerts and CD-recordings of the most wellknown sacred works by J S Bach and Handel.

Karl-Magnus Fredriksson has more than 35 CD´s in his discography, including masses, passions, oratorios, requiem as well as works by old and new Swedish composers, Christmas hymns and carols, psalms, Nordic, English and French songs and German Lieder, popular songs, opera arias, orchestral songs and operetta.

Karl-Magnus Fredriksson is a frequent performer on TV and Radio and has participated in as well traditional music programs as in productions of contemporary music and unrecorded older material. During his career he has explored a wide repertoire ranging from opera, sacred music, orchestral songs to Nordic, English and French songs and German Lieder. He likes to create concert programs where popular Folk Song and Lieder can meet. His own compositions and arrangements for singing, piano and different instrument ensembles are often combined with his own spoken personal and poetic thoughts and a part of his wish to find new expressions and audiences with his versatile voice and art of singing.

Karl-Magnus Fredriksson studied with Professor and Royal Court Singer Erik Saedén at the University College of Opera in Stockholm and graduated in 1991. He has studied with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and today Karl-Magnus Fredriksson is both much in demand as a singer and as coach, giving Masterclasses in technique and interpretation at a high level and privately. He is also sculptor, painting artist and composer.

In October 2018 he released his second studio album Songs of Life 2.
