Thomas Tatzl

Bariton

Firmly established as one of the leading Mozart bass-baritones of his generation, Thomas Tatzl has brought to life the roles of Papageno, Figaro and Conte Almaviva at many of the world’s major opera houses and festivals including the Wiener Staatsoper, Opernhaus Zürich, Theater Basel, Teatro La Fenice, Teatro dell´Opera di Roma, Teatro Regio Torino, Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, Oper Köln and Beijing NCPA.
Thomas made his debut at the Salzburger Festspiele in 2012 as Papageno in Das Labyrinth by Peter von Winter with the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg conducted by Ivor Bolton.
Career highlights include Harlequin in Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos under Franz Welser Möst for La Scala and in a Robert Carsen production for the Bayerische Staatsoper. He debuted the role of Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff alongside Donato Renzetti at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari and appeared in the world premiere of Mauricio Sotelo’s El Publico led by Pablo Heras-Casado at the Teatro Real in Madrid. Thomas was invited to sing Collatinus in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Nick Shadow in Stravinsky’s The Rake‘s Progress in Rennes and Nantes and Don Fernando in Beethoven’s Fidelio at the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid.
Most recently, he headlined Maurice Béjart’s ballet Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, set to a score by Gustav Mahler, at the Bastille Opera.

A much sought-after concert and oratorio singer, Thomas Tatzl shared the stage with Riccardo Muti in Ravenna for Haydn’s Schöpfung he also performed with La Fura dels Baus for both the Lincoln Center in New York and La Seine Musicale in Paris.
With the complicity of Daniele Gatti he sang Bach’s Cantata BWV 78 “Jesu, der du meine Seele” for the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. He appeared in the St Matthew Passion with Philippe Herreweghe and his Collegium Vocale Gent for deSingel in Antwerp, and with Alessandro De Marchi for the Theater Basel.
Thomas was the bass soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in Milan, Zurich and Madrid and, under the knowing hand of Antonio Pappano, in Rome and Caserta. It was again under the lead of Maestro Pappano that he sang the baritone part in Ein Deutsches Requiem by Brahms for the Santa Cecilia Hall in Rome, followed by performances of the work under Matthew Halls in Antwerp and Ghent. He could be heard in Mozart’s Requiem alongside Laurence Equilbey and the Mozarteumorchester in Salzburg and in Fauré’s Requiem with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra led by James Gaffigan at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam.
He further performed Schubert’s Mass in E flat major accompanied by the Münchener Kammerorchester and the RIAS Kammerchor at both the Prinzregententheater and Berlin Philharmonie, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis in Tokyo with Ingo Metzmacher leading the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Mass in C Major by the same composer with the Arnold Schönberg Chor at Antwerp’s deSingel.
Tatzl is also particularly renowned for his compelling performances of German Lieder having debuted at La Scala with Schubert’s Winterreise he subsequently presented, with the Ballet Preljocaj, for the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris.
He gave Lieder recitals at the Schubertiade in Hohenems, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and the Gstaad Menuhin Festival among other prestigious festivals and venues. He sang Mahler’s Das klagende Lied with James Conlon and the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI and performed some of Schubert’s Lieder with the Munich Symphony Orchestra at the Prinzregententheater.
In the 2023/2024 season, Thomas returned to the role of Dr. Falke in J. Strauss’ Die Fledermaus for the New National Theatre in Tokyo, Opéra de Toulon, Opéra de Rennes and Angers-Nantes Opéra. He was also singing Bach’s Matthäus-Passion in Hamburg.
In the summer of 2024 he will sing the title role in the opera Don Giovanni (W.A. Mozart) as part of the newly founded opera festival “Wiener Opernsommer” in the Belvedere Palace Park.

This year he sang Messiah by G.F.Händel at the St. Etienne Opera house and had his house debut at the Teatro Filarmonico di Verona as Orest in Electra by Richard Strauss.
