Dramatic Baritone Daniel Sutin’s career has taken him onto the prestigious stages of the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, L’Opera de Montreal, Canadian Opera Company, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Washington National Opera, and the Spoleto, Savonlinna, and Lincoln Center Festivals. 

Recent performances include covering the title role in Wozzeck at Canadian Opera Company. Conte di Luna (Il Trovatore) at Boheme Opera of New Jersey, Alfio (Cavalleria Rusticana)in the Classical Concert Series at Seton Hall University, Sharpless (Madama Butterfly) at Boheme Opera, the title role in Rigoletto at Opera North, Don Fernando (Fidelio) at the Polish National Opera, and Baron Scarpia in the Northern Lights Music Festival’s critically acclaimed production of Tosca; this last was the first North American opera production to be performed with social distancing.

In the 2019-20 season, Mr. Sutin again covered the title role in Wozzeck at the Metropolitan Opera, where he had performed the role in 2014 to standing ovations. This season also marked his debut with Arizona Opera as Giorgio Germont in La Traviata.

In 2017-18, Sutin’s engagements included Baron Scarpia in Boston Lyric Opera’s new production of Tosca, Giacomo (Giovanna d’Arco) at Odyssey Opera, and covering the role of Alberich (Siegfried) at Lyric Opera of Chicago. In addition, he also covered Alberich in San Francisco Opera’s complete Ring Cycle.

In previous seasons at the Met, Mr. Sutin also covered the title role in Wozzeck and sang the One-Eyed Brother (Die Frau ohne Schatten). Sutin debuted the role of Jokanaan (Salome) with the DetroitSymphony, sang Don Fernando (Fidelio) with Cincinnati Opera, Iago (Otello)with the Phoenicia Festival of Voice, Enrico Ashton (Lucia di Lammermoor )with Boheme Opera of New Jersey, and covered both the title role in Wozzeck and Alberich (Das Rheingold) at Lyric Opera of Chicago. In addition, Sutin covered the role of Alberich (Der Ring des Nibelungen) at Washington National Opera during the 2015-16 season.

His engagements for the 2014-15 season include Biterolf (Tannhauser)at Lyric Opera of Chicago and Sharpless (Madama Butterfly) at Hawaii Opera Theatre. In 2013, he sang Giorgio Germont (La Traviata)with the Savonlinna Opera Festival in Finland, the title role of Rigoletto with Musica Viva -The Opera Society of Hong Kong, Konrad Nachtigall (Die Meistersinger von Nuremberg) with Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Tonio (I Pagliacci) with Austin Lyric Opera. Highlights of the 2011-12 season include Mr. Sutin’s debut with Boston Lyric Opera as the title role in Macbeth, and Marcello (La Boheme) with Opera Fairbanks.

In 2010-11, he returned to Lyric Opera of Chicago as Sonora (La Fanciulla del West) , and sang Paolo Albiani (Simon Boccanegra) with L’Opera de Montreal, Iago (Otello) with Palm Beach Opera, and was at the Met for Wozzeck and Boris Godunov. In addition, he sang Baron Scarpia (Tosca) with Las Vegas Opera.

2009-10 season highlights: Peter the Father cover (Hansel und Gretel) at the Met, Rigoletto at both San Antonio Opera and Nashville Opera, and Paolo Albiani (Simon Boccanegra) at Canadian Opera Company.

2008-09 marked Mr. Sutin’s debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as Sonora (La Fanciulla del West).In addition, he sang Sharpless (Madama Butterfly) with both the Savonlinna Opera Festival and Michigan Opera Theatre. 2007-8 was his Lyric Opera of Chicago debut as the One-Eyed Brother (Die Frau ohne Schatten). It was also his seventh season at the met, where he was Paris (Romeo et Juliette). Mr. Sutin was heard at the Met in the world premiere of Tan Dun’s The First Emperor, and sang Orest (Elektra)with Canadian Opera Company and Conte di Luna (Il Trovatore)at the Caramoor Festival.

Mr. Sutin was born in Albany, New York, and earned Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Vocal Performance at The Juilliard School. He furthered his studies with Armen Boyajian.
