Biographie / biography

Iurie Ciobanu was born in Moldova and started his career in Cluj-Napoca (Romania). He completed his vocal studies at the Conservatory of Music “Gh. Dima" in Cluj-Napoca and at the "Conservatoire de Musique" in Luxembourg with Ionel Pantea.

In 2022 his engagements include Germont at Bühne Baden and Canio i Pagliacci at Den Jyske Opera.

After his first appearance in 1996 as Don Ottavio at the age of 20 at the Romanian State Opera Timisoara, projects followed in 2004 as Almaviva (IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA) in Magdeburg and he became a member of the ensemble of the Linzer Landestheater, where he made his debut as Tamino in THE MAGIC FLUTE.

In 2006 he was the first prize winner of the “Int. Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition” and made his operatic debut at the Teatro Pavarotti Modena and the Teatro Comunale di Ferrara with Belmonte (THE ENTFUTURE FROM THE SERAIL).

In the 2008/09 season he made his operatic debut as Almaviva (IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA) at the Vienna State Opera.
He also performed i.a. as Don Ramiro (LA CENERENTOLA), Ferrando (COSÌ FAN TUTTE), Belmonte (THE ADVANCEMENT FROM THE SERAIL), Ernesto (DON PASQUALE) and Nemorino (L'ELISIR D'AMORE), Laicester (MARIA STUARDA), Lenski (EVGENI ONEGIN). ), Count Tassilo (COUNTESS MARIZA), Sou-Chong (THE LAND OF SMILES), Barinkay (THE GYPSY BARON), Edwin (THE CSÁRDÁS PRINCESS), Alfred (THE BAT) in different houses.
Iurie Ciobanu works with well-known conductors, singers and directors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Christian Thielemann, Daniele Gatti, Dennis Russell Davies, Gustav Kuhn, Stefan Soltesz, Paolo Carignani, Ralf Weikert, Kurt Rydl, René Kollo, Albert Dohmen, Michael Volle, Stephen Gould, Michael Schade, Ruxandra Donose, Nina Stemme, Ludovic Spiess, Christa Ludwig, Markus Werba, Adrian Eröd, Dieter Dorn, Harry Kupfer, Pier Luigi Pizzi, Olivier Tambosi, Uwe Eric Laufenberg, David Pountney, Stefano Poda, Amon Miyamoto, Beverly Blankenship, Julian Pölsler, Jens Daniel Herzog, Achim Freyer and Robert Wilson together.
He also won international singing competitions such as the Traian Grozavescu tenor competition in Romania and the Concours National in Luxembourg.

From 2005 to 2017 he was a member of the ensemble at the Landestheater Linz. He also successfully sang the tenor in Beethoven's 9th Symphony and Jaquino in FIDELIO alongside Kurt Rydl and Endrik Wottrich under Dennis Russell Davies in the Brucknerhaus Linz.
In the course of his career he sang in Vienna, Scala, Baden-Baden, Catania, Graz, Salzburg, Berlin, Dresden, Salzburg Easter Festival, Magdeburg, Nuremberg, Wiesbaden, Prague and also gave numerous concerts in Switzerland, Holland, Luxembourg, France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Romania, Hungary, Italy, Sicily and Cyprus.

Most recently he has sung: David (DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG) in Erl and Beijing and Arnold (GUGLIELMO TELL) at the Festival Erl. Don Ramiro (LA CENERENTOLA) in Prague, Vogelgesang (DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG) at Scala Milano, Alfredo (LA TRAVIATA), Pelleas (PELLEAS UND MELISANDE), Ottavio (DON GIOVANNI), Rodolfo (LA BOHÈME), Naraboth and 1 Jew (SALOME), Fenton (FALSTAFF), Tamino (THE MAGIC FLUTE), Comte Ory (LE COMTE ORY), Arturo (I PURITANI), Oreste (ERMIONE), Walther (TANNHAUSER).
