Biographie / biography
Eszter Sümegi obtained her opera singer diploma at the Ferenc Liszt Music Academy in 1993 and since that time has been one of the leading sopranos of the Budapest National Opera.
Her international career also began in 1993 when got 1st prize at the Pavarotti International Competition singing the role of Ines from Donizetti: La Favorita under the professional guidance of the maestro.
In 2012 she became one of the firsts to be awarded the Kammersaengerin of the Budapest Opera distinction which she won again in 2015, both for her Richard Strauss roles/Arabella, Kaiserin.
Upcoming engagements in 2022 include Amelia (Ballo in Maschera), Maddalena (Andrea Chenier) and Kaiserin (Frau ohne Schatten) at the Hungarian State Opera.
She has been a guest at many leading opera houses of the world from the Berlin Komische Oper to the Wien Staatsoper, Frankfurt,Salzburg,Bregenz,Toronto/5 times re-invited/, Paris/Chatelet, etc. and sang with leading conductors and worked with star stage directors as e.g. Mo.Christoph Eschenbach or Robert Wilson. Such as during her long career sang with such sought after soloists as José Cura,László Polgár, Giuseppe Giacomini or Niel Schicoff.
Her Tosca thrilled audiences in the Wien Staatsoper, Frankfurt, Toronto Operas, her Aida Pittsbugh, Barcelona mega production, Beijing among others.
Her extremely rich and large repertory contains all the big Verdi, Puccini,Bellini heroines such as Richard Strauss- Marschallin, Arabella/title role, Kaiserin/Die Frau ohne Schatten and the big roles of Richard Wagner- Elisabeth, Elsa, Senta,Sigelinde, Brünnhilde/Siegfried.
Her Sulamith in Goldmark’s „The Queen of Sheba” was a revelation according to the international critiques such as her Kaiserin, which was even specially nominated as world first class interpretation.
