Biographie / biography
Vasily Barkhatov was born in Moscow. In 2005 he graduated from the Russian Academy of Theatre Art (faculty of musical theatre, department of stage directing and acting in musical theatre, workshop of Rozetta Nemchinskaya).
His productions include Die Fledermaus at the Bolshoi Theatre (2010), H. Berlioz’s Damnation of Faust( Mannheim National Theater, 2015), B. A. Zimmermann's Soldiers (Internationalen Maifestspielen, Wiesbaden, 2016), world premiere A. Reimann's Invisible (Deutsche Oper Berlin, 2017), P. Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin(Stockholm Royal Opera, 2018).
At the Mariinsky Theatre he has staged operas Jenůfa by Janáček (2007), Benvenuto Cellini by Berlioz (2007), Otello by Verdi (2007), The Brothers Karamazov by Smelkov (2008), R. Shchedrin‘s Dead Souls (2011) and J. Offenbach‘s The Tales of Hoffmann (2011).
In 2012 28-year-old V. Barkhatov made his debut in the sphere of cinema by directing a feature-length film Atomic Ivan.
At the Basel Opera Theatre he staged M. Mussorgsky’s Khovanshchina (2015) and G. Puccini’s Madama Butterfly (2019). At the Hungarian National Opera he directed G. Puccini’s La fanciulla del West (2018).
