Biographie / biography
Vasily Barkhatov is one of the most sought-after directors of his generation.
He was born in Moscow and graduated from the Russian Institute of Theatrical Arts in 2005 in the Department of Direction and Performance in Musical Theater.
In addition to the Frankfurt premiere of Die Zauberin, his other plans for the 2022/23 season include Der Idiot (Weinberg), a production by Theater an der Wien, Simon Boccanegra (Verdi) at Deutsche Oper Berlin and Grand Macabre at Oper Frankfurt.
He has just staged The Flying Dutchman with great success at Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf. Before this he directed Siberia by Giordano at Bregenzer Festspiele, which will be shown again at Theater Bonn in the 22/23 season.
His other directorial work includes Reimann's L'Invisible at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, he staged Mussorgsky's Khovanshchina, Prokofiev's The Gambler and Puccini's Madame Butterfly at Theater Basel. At the Erkel Theater in Budapest he staged Puccini's La fanciulla del West. He also staged Eugene Onegin in Stockholm and Wiesbaden as well as Zimmermann's Die Soldaten at the Wiesbaden International Mai Festspiele. His interpretation of Korngold's Die Tote Stadt was shown at the New Moscow Opera and will be revived on December 22.
At the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, Barkhatov staged Offenbach's Les contes d'Hoffmann, Verdi's Otello, Berlioz' Benvenuto Cellini and Janáček's Jenůfa. He also directed at the Lithuanian National Opera in Vilnius (Eugene Onegin) and at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow (Die Fledermaus). In 2013/14 Vasily Barkhatov was Artistic Director at the Mikhailovsky Theater in St. Petersburg, where he staged f.ex. The Flying Dutchman.
