Biographie / biography

Born in Metsamor (Armenia), graduated in 2004 at the Yerevan Conservatory under the guidance of Sergey Danielyan. He was finalist at the A. Isahakian Republic Vocal Competition (2000). Since 2003, he is a soloist with the Yerevan Opera Theater, where he has performed in several productions including Aleko, Arshak II and Iolanta, to name only a few.

In 2017/18 he will sing Count Tomski in Pique Dame at Oper Stuttgart. At the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma he will sing Tosca’s Baron Scarpia, Tonio in Pagliacci and Alfio in Cavalleria rusticana; at the Scottish Opera he will perform in Aleko and Francesca da Rimni.


In 2016/17 he sang the title role in Simon Boccanegra at the Mariinsky Theatre, Mathieu at the Teatro dell’ Opera di Roma, and the title role in Nabucco at the Terme di Caracalla, Escamillo in Carmen and the title role in Aleko at the Spendiarian Opera and Ballet Theatre and

In 2015/16 he sang the title role of Verdi’s Nabucco and Il Barone Scarpia at Kiel Opera House as well as Paolo Albiani in Simon Boccanegra at the Hong Kong Arts Festival.

In 2014/15 he appeared as Baron Scarpia in Puccini’s Tosca with Maria Guleghina in the title role at the Mariinsky Theatre.

In 2014 March, in Valencia, Spain he performed the part of Paolo Albiani in Simone Boccanegra by G.Verdi. The part of Simone Boccanegra performed by Placido Domingo. In 2014 December, in Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, he appeared as Bess in Tchaykovsky’s The Slippers, conductor Donato Renzetti. In 2014 May - June, in Kiel Opera House (Germany), the role of Sharpless in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly and the role of Carlo Gérard in Giordano's Andrea Chénier.
In 2013 January, in Valencia, Spain he was the cover for P.Domingo, in the part of Francesco Foscari in Due Foscari by G.Verdi.
In 2013 May, at the Mikhailovsky Theatre of St.Petersburg he performed the part of Tonio in I Pagliacci by R.Leonkavallo. In 2013 June, in Kazan, he performed the part of Nabucco in the same opera by G.Verdi. In 2013 December, in Mariinsky theatre, St. Petersburg, he performed the part of Amonasro in opera Aida by Verdi.

He recently sang Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci at the Mikhailovskij Theatre in St. Petersburg; Madama Butterfly (Sharpless) and Cavalleria Rusticana in Valencia, under the baton of Lorin Maazel; Aida (Amonasro) in Armenia and at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia; Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci in Mumbai; Cavalleria Rusticanaat the Mikhailovskij Theatre in St. Petersburg; Carmen in Kazan.


He participated in several oratorios performed at the John Smith Hall in London in 2007 and the same year he was awarded a special prize for the achievements in classical music performances by the President of the Republic of Armenia. In 2008, he won the First Prize and Gold Medal at the First International Pavel Lisitsian Baritone Competition.

Mr. Hakobyan is frequently invited to the Teatro Lirico in Cagliari, where he has already performed: The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevroniya (Fiodor); Eugene Onegin (title role); Cavalleria Rusticana (Alfio); Pagliacci (Tonio); I Shardana (Norace); and The Bartered Bride (Micha).



Concert activities:

2007 - John Smith Concert Hall in London (England), Charity concert organized by the Hayastan All Armenian Fund

2011 - Concert tour through Europe with the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia, conductor: Srgey smbatyan, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Armenia’s independence held in the concert halls of Berlin Konzerthaus (Germany), Konzerthaus Karlsruhe (Germany), Anton Philipszaal (The Hague, Amsterdam),

2012 - "The new millennium golden voice" opera Youth Forum (Belarus National Academic Grand Theatre, Minsk);

2012 - "Odessa welcomes friends" Second International Festival of Arts and Culture (Odessa).

2013 - Solo concert of Tchaikovsky's and Rachmaninov's romances at the Armenian Opera and Ballet National Academic Theatre

2013 - Closing gala-concert of XXXI International Opera Festival named after Fyodor Shalyapin conducted by Valery Gergiev, with Mariinsky Theatre’s leading singers and orchestra, which went out live on " Mezzo" and "Culture" TV channels (Kazan)
